"Marriages and Returns" is the third volume of "Coalwood and Caretta in Pictures." This volume presents a compilation of hundreds of marriage applications and returns of residents of McDowell County, West Virginia.  

INTRODUCTION

Coalwood and Caretta in Pictures, Volume Three: Marriages and Returns is the third book of Coalwood and Caretta in Pictures. The following pages contain images of Marriage Applications and Returns of current and former residents of the sister communities of Coalwood and Caretta, McDowell County, West Virginia . 

     For purposes of this book, the coal camp known as Six is considered part of Coalwood. The reader or researcher should keep in mind that if there was no Return the marriage might not have taken place, at least in McDowell County .    Lebanon , Virginia and Pikeville , Kentucky were used frequently for quick marriages.  There is much information to be gained from many of these applications: Full name of the applicant, place of birth, age, status, color, occupation, parents, current residence, minister, etc. All are invaluable to individuals interested in tracing their family histories.  This collection is  by no means complete.  The names of the bride and groom, parents (where listed), and minister are indexed.  Due to repetition, Clerks of Court, Deputies, Justices of the Peace and other court personnel are not; nor are place names indexed.

     If your interests are not met herein, you may do further research through the West Virginia Vital Statistics website or at the county court houses at Welch , West Virginia , Lebanon , Virginia , Pikeville , Kentucky and others.
