Shadows Over Us Part II

Book Layout

Shadows Over Us, Part II is laid out in seven sections. A brief description of each follows:

The Beginnings: This section offers a short summary of the original book; and adds any new information discovered after its publication.

The Early Wars:
Presents military and some pension records of Hatmakers, who fought in wars before, during and after the American Revolution, but prior to 1861.

The Civil War:
You will find full transcriptions of combined military and pension records found at the National Archives. The flag used at the time of service identifies the affiliation of each Soldier. All depositions, statements, declarations, and correspondence are transcribed and spelled as written, although some punctuation has been added to clarify and simplify the reading process. We have purposely made very few side notes; we felt it important that each reader should be allowed to draw his or her own conclusions without the transcriber’s bias.

War With Spain:
This section deals with the combined military and pension records of Soldiers, who served during the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, and of those who served after the war but before World War One.

The Great War
:
Features fully transcribed World War One Draft Registrations of Hatmaker registrants in counties of several states.

The Tennessee Valley Authority:

1. The Grave removal transcriptions give a wrenching account of how, when and where T.V.A. removed the remains of our ancestors. In some cases, the detail is so great that the actual times of disinterment and re-interment are recorded.

2. The University of Tennessee Family Survey paints a picture of how our ancestors lived during the 1930’s. What they ate, what they farmed, the type of land they owned or rented, their financial status, which churches they chose to attend, where they traded, and a myriad of other interesting and enlightening details.

A Chronology: Presented here is a chronology of the most important dates in the emigration and settling of our ancestors. It includes removal dates, wills, land transactions and other important events.
