Live life as your ancestors experienced it! Sail with them down the English Channel
and cross the tortuous North Atlantic to

Know which Hatmakers fought in the French and Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War and
the War of 1812!

Who were the immigrant Hatmakers? Who was the maternal immigrant grandfather? From
which village in which country did they immigrate? What did they do for a living? What was
the actual name? What might it have really meant? Why did they leave? How much did they
pay to leave? Who were their children and spouses? When did they arrive? On what ship? Who
was its captain? Where did they settle? Which two brothers became lost from one another?
Where did they travel? Whom did they marry? Did they own slaves? How many? What
were their names? How much land did they own and where? How did they acquire it and from
whom? Who moved over the western mountains to Tennessee Country? Which widows received a
war pension and how much? Who received bounty land? How about Jacob of
Chestnuthill, Pennsylvania?
SHADOWS OVER US will answer these questions: How
do the early Sharp, Leach, Laux, Bub/Bouha/Boo/Booe, Fritscher, Keck, and Haug families
fit into Hatmaker history? Who signed a petition for a bridge in 1787? What did his
signature look like? What happened after the early deaths? What did they say in their
wills? Who were John Rich, William Leach, Elias Albright, Jacob Moser, Jeremiah Holt and
John Boon? Who were impaneled on a North Carolina jury - and why did they serve? What was
the outcome? Why is there "A Tale of Two Wills?" Who were Rebecca and William
Hatmaker?

Why the book is entitled SHADOWS OVER US:

During a careful and long research period, this writer was constantly amazed at the
spirit, grit, will, determination, perseverance, stamina and steadfastness exhibited by
the pioneer Hatmakers and their fellow immigrants!!
These were men and women of great virtue and stature; people who fought for their
ideals, while continuing to struggle for their very survival. They had strong religious
beliefs and their very lives were based upon the teachings of the church.

These men and women - your ancestors - met the challenges of everyday life before and
after the Revolutionary War. They contributed in no small way to securing the foundation
of freedoms upon which this great nation rests. They were tall people - big people - who
will forever cast their long Shadows Over Us - and over all the generations to
follow!
